A Comparison of the Ducky one 2 mini and Ducky one 3 mini Keyboards What’s New and What’s Different?

Ducky one 3 mini VS one 2 mini review

In this review, we’re diving into the details of two popular mechanical keyboards, the Ducky one 2 mini and its successor, the Ducky one 3 mini. These 60% keyboards are equipped with Cherry MX Silver (Speedy) switches, and while both models are highly regarded, there are key differences that could make one a better choice depending on your preferences. Let's break it down!

The Sound Test

First off, let's talk sound. After lubing all the switches on the Ducky one 2 mini, the typing experience was notably smooth and quiet. Straight out of the box, though, the newer Ducky one 3 mini produces a different sound—it's not as smooth, with a faint “grainy” sensation in the switches, almost as if there’s a bit of sand inside. The spring sound is a little loud without lube, but the spacebar’s release sound is more pleasing compared to the older version.

Quack Mechanic: What Is It?

The Ducky one 3 mini features a new “Quack Mechanic,” which we’ll explore more. It’s a subtle improvement in the design and functionality of the keyboard, particularly in the sound and feedback of keystrokes. This refinement makes typing on the Ducky one 3 mini feel tighter and more controlled, but we'll need to test further to fully appreciate its effect.

Unboxing and Design

Let’s take a look at the unboxing experience. The Ducky one 3 mini comes in a vibrant color scheme that resembles a sporty Nike color palette. Inside, you’ll find a user manual, Ducky stickers, additional special keycaps, and a USB Type-A to Type-C cable. Plus, the hot-swappable switches allow for easy customization, making this keyboard even more versatile.

When comparing the designs, the Ducky one 2 mini has a smoother, more rounded aesthetic, whereas the Ducky one 3 mini is slightly sharper and edgier. The newer version is also a bit wider, measuring about 8mm more, though the overall height remains the same.

Features and Functionality

One notable difference is how the function key layout works. The Ducky one 2 mini allows you to use WASD keys for mouse control when pressing the function key. However, on the Ducky one 3 mini, this feature is moved to the second layer of functions, meaning you now need to press Function + Alt to activate it. It’s a small change, but something worth noting if you're used to the original layout.

Both keyboards are highly customizable, thanks to the ability to remap keys. However, Ducky has printed several functions onto the keycaps, so if you decide to remap, you’ll need to remember your new setup.

Build Quality

The build quality of both keyboards is solid, but there are subtle changes in the newer version. For instance, the USB-C port on the Ducky one 3 mini is more integrated into the keyboard, providing a more secure fit. On the older version, the port is outside the keyboard, which makes it easier to plug in but more prone to wear over time since it lacks side support.

The rubber feet on the Ducky one 2 mini are more pronounced, which could lead to less portability. In contrast, the feet on the Ducky one 3 mini are integrated into the frame, making it more sleek and travel-friendly.

Final Thoughts

Both the Ducky one 2 mini and the Ducky one 3 mini are excellent keyboards, each with its strengths. The one 2 mini has a smoother, more familiar feel, while the one 3 mini introduces new features and design elements that make it feel more polished, including the Quack Mechanic and better spacebar acoustics.

If you're all about customization and a compact design, you can’t go wrong with either model. It all comes down to whether you prefer the familiarity of the one 2 mini or the new tweaks found in the one 3 mini.

That’s the end of this comparison! If you enjoyed it, don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel In Front PC where we dive deep into hardware like keyboards, mice, switches, controllers, and more.
