Exploring the Falcam MagLink Camera Strap: How It Stacks Up Against Peak Design
Today, we're diving into something exciting—an innovative camera strap system that's both functional and stylish. We're talking about the Falcam MagLink Camera Strap, a new magnetic camera strap system that’s drawing comparisons to the well-known Peak Design Quick Release Strap. But is it really a contender? Let’s find out!
Falcam MagLink vs Peak Design
First Impressions: The Magnet Magic
The standout feature of the Falcam MagLink is, of course, the magnet. Magnets are everywhere in this system—even the box has magnetic closures! Inside, you’ll find a beautifully crafted leather camera strap, complete with multiple magnets that are integral to its unique design.
In the box, you also get some extras, including a little pouch and two extra cables for a second camera. The strap itself already comes with two cables attached, so you’re ready to go from the start.
The leather portion of the strap feels premium—solid yet soft, with cushioning that’s bouncy and comfortable for long shooting sessions. The adjustable parts, made from lightweight plastic, are another design choice aimed at reducing weight without compromising durability.
Comparing to Peak Design: Is Falcam Up to the Task?
Naturally, the first comparison is with the industry favorite, Peak Design. Peak Design’s camera strap system is renowned for its quick release mechanism, and the Falcam MagLink seems to follow a similar path, but with a twist—magnets instead of mechanical clasps.
One key difference is the thickness of the cables. The Peak Design strap has cables that are significantly thicker, about twice as thick as Falcam’s. Yet, Falcam claims their cables can support up to 60 kilograms (about 130 pounds)! While I doubt many photographers are lugging around cameras that heavy, it’s reassuring to know that Falcam's cables are strong enough for almost any gear you throw at it.
Another notable difference is the length of the cables. Peak Design’s cables are much shorter, while Falcam provides extra length, making it easier to manage the camera’s positioning when wearing the strap.
Testing the Magnet: Safety Concerns?
At first, the idea of relying on a magnet to hold up my expensive camera didn’t sound too reassuring. A camera worth thousands of dollars with an equally valuable lens, all hanging by a magnet? It seemed risky, to say the least.
However, the Falcam MagLink surprised me. During testing, I found that once the camera is locked into place, it’s very secure. The magnet does its job incredibly well, and even when trying to apply extra force to see if it would pop loose, the camera stayed firmly in place.
To release the camera, you simply pull a small cable, which disconnects the magnet with a satisfying click. It's both fast and easy—practically effortless.
For those familiar with Peak Design, you’ll recognize the ease of their system as well. Push the button, and your camera is secured or released in seconds. The Falcam MagLink system works similarly but adds the novel magnet touch, which feels equally secure once you get used to it.
Comfort & Speed: A Winner?
What really impressed me was the comfort of the Falcam strap. The wide shoulder pad with its cushioned, bouncy padding makes long shoots far more bearable, distributing the weight evenly and preventing strain on your shoulder.
Plus, the quick-adjustment system is a joy to use. If you need to shorten or lengthen the strap on the fly, you can do so in a matter of seconds. One quick pull, and you’re ready to shoot. Need more length? Another tug, and you’re all set.
Conclusion: Should You Make the Switch?
So, should you ditch Peak Design and switch to Falcam?
If you already own a Peak Design Quick Release System, there’s no pressing reason to switch. Peak Design has earned its reputation for a reason, offering excellent products with great reliability.
But if you’re looking for a new camera strap, or you want to add speed and convenience to your gear setup, Falcam MagLink is definitely worth considering. The magnet-based system, coupled with a lightweight and comfortable design, makes it an appealing alternative to Peak Design.
Falcam’s MagLink offers a blend of innovation and reliability, creating an awesome quick-release system that might just be the perfect companion for your photography adventures.
