At this year's photography and imaging exhibitions, manufacturers continued pushing tripod design beyond the traditional twist-lock and flip-lock systems photographers have used for decades. One of the more interesting concepts on display was the new Manfrotto ONE prototype tripod, a product aimed primarily at photographers who want faster deployment and simplified height adjustments.
At first glance, the concept looks innovative. Manfrotto is clearly attempting to rethink how photographers interact with a tripod in the field. However, after examining the design more closely, one particular feature immediately raises questions about real-world usability: the location of the tripod's release mechanism.

A New Approach to Tripod Adjustment
The Manfrotto ONE prototype introduces a centralized quick-adjustment system designed to make changing tripod height faster and more convenient. Rather than using multiple locks distributed along each leg section, the design appears to consolidate control into a single release lever positioned around the middle section of the tripod.
The idea itself is not without merit. A centralized locking system can potentially reduce setup time, simplify operation, and create a cleaner overall design. For photographers who frequently move between shooting positions, reducing the number of adjustment points could theoretically improve workflow efficiency.
But innovative concepts always face the same challenge: how well do they work in practical shooting situations?
The Ergonomic Concern: Why Place the Lever in the Middle?
My biggest concern with the Manfrotto ONE prototype is the location of the release lever.
Because the adjustment mechanism sits around the middle of the tripod, users must repeatedly bend down every time they want to change the height. Whether raising the tripod, lowering it, or making small adjustments, the process requires reaching toward the center section rather than accessing controls near the top.
This might not seem like a major issue when viewed on a showroom floor, but in real-world photography it becomes much more noticeable.
Photographers often make dozens—sometimes hundreds—of height adjustments during a shoot. Wedding photographers, landscape photographers, event shooters, and content creators constantly reposition their cameras throughout the day. Repeatedly bending down to access a centrally located lever could become tiring over long shooting sessions.
The issue becomes even more pronounced when the tripod is positioned at its lowest height.
If the tripod is collapsed close to the ground, the release mechanism effectively moves down near floor level. At that point, every adjustment requires the user to crouch or bend significantly just to reach the control. For photographers working in outdoor environments, uneven terrain, mud, sand, or rocky surfaces, this could become particularly inconvenient.
Looking at the Competition: Why Top-Mounted Controls Are Popular
What's interesting is that many modern fast-deployment tripod systems have moved in the opposite direction.
A good example is the highly regarded Flowtech tripod system developed by Vitec Group brands (now part of Videndum). One of the reasons Flowtech gained such popularity among filmmakers and video professionals is its highly ergonomic design. The release latches are positioned near the top of the tripod legs, allowing operators to adjust height while standing upright.
Instead of bending down, users can simply reach toward the upper section of the tripod, release the locks, adjust the height, and continue shooting.
This design significantly improves workflow speed, especially during fast-paced productions where every second matters.
Interestingly, many newer tripod manufacturers—particularly brands from China that have entered the professional support equipment market in recent years—have also adopted top-mounted locking systems. Whether aimed at filmmakers or photographers, many of these products place the release mechanisms where users can access them most comfortably.
This naturally raises the question:
Why did Manfrotto choose a different approach?
There May Be Engineering Reasons Behind the Design
To be fair, product prototypes often prioritize engineering goals that aren't immediately obvious from a first impression.
There may be valid reasons why Manfrotto placed the release mechanism in the center of the tripod.
Possible explanations include:
Improved Structural Rigidity
A centralized locking mechanism could potentially distribute forces more evenly throughout the tripod structure. By concentrating the locking system at a specific point, engineers may have found a way to improve overall stiffness and stability.
For photographers using high-resolution cameras and long telephoto lenses, even small improvements in rigidity can make a noticeable difference.
Reduced Weight
One possibility is that the new design helps reduce overall weight.
Many quick-deployment tripod systems tend to be heavier because they require additional components, larger latches, and more complex leg structures. If Manfrotto has discovered a way to simplify the mechanism while maintaining strength, the result could be a lighter tripod that remains easy to operate.
For travel photographers and outdoor creators, every gram saved matters.
Better Manufacturing Efficiency
Another possibility is production efficiency.
A centralized mechanism could reduce the number of moving parts, simplify assembly, and potentially improve long-term reliability. Fewer components often mean fewer potential failure points.
A Different User Experience Philosophy
Manfrotto may also be targeting a different audience than video-focused tripod systems like Flowtech.
Photographers often prioritize portability, compactness, and weight savings over the ultra-fast deployment requirements common in film and broadcast environments. What appears less ergonomic to one user group may make perfect sense for another.
The Importance of Real-World Testing
At this stage, it's important to remember that the Manfrotto ONE remains a prototype product.
Trade show demonstrations provide an initial impression, but they rarely tell the full story. Features that seem unusual on paper sometimes prove highly effective once tested in actual shooting environments. Likewise, designs that appear impressive during a brief hands-on session can reveal limitations after months of professional use.
Until photographers have the opportunity to use the tripod in the field, it's difficult to make a definitive judgment.
The central release system may ultimately offer benefits that outweigh its apparent ergonomic drawbacks. Or it may reinforce why so many tripod manufacturers have moved toward top-mounted locking mechanisms in recent years.
First Impressions
The Manfrotto ONE prototype is certainly one of the more interesting tripod concepts to emerge from recent photography exhibitions. It shows that even a product category as mature as the tripod still has room for innovation.
However, the placement of the release lever remains the biggest question mark. Requiring users to bend down for every height adjustment feels counterintuitive when many competing systems have spent years optimizing for standing-height operation.
That said, there may be engineering advantages hidden beneath the design—whether improved rigidity, reduced weight, increased durability, or some other benefit not immediately obvious from a brief demonstration.
For now, the Manfrotto ONE stands as a fascinating prototype that challenges conventional tripod ergonomics. Whether that challenge ultimately results in a better user experience is something photographers will have to discover once the product reaches real-world testing and production release.
