Comparing the Canon 11-24mm Ultra-Wide Lens with the Sigma DP0 Quattro: A Battle Between Giants

Today, we’re diving into a comparison of two highly regarded photography tools—the Canon 11-24mm Ultra-Wide Angle lens paired with an APS-C sensor, and the Sigma DP0 Quattro. Both are known for their distinctive qualities, but which one truly shines? Let’s break it down.

Sigma DP0 Quattro vs canon 7DII

The Canon 11-24mm Lens: A Beast in the Lens World

The Canon 11-24mm Ultra-Wide Angle lens is not only huge but also carries a hefty price tag. However, that cost is justified by its exceptional performance, delivering images with superb sharpness and beautiful color reproduction. It’s a powerhouse lens that, when paired with a Canon APS-C sensor, promises spectacular results.

The Sigma DP0 Quattro: A Compact Contender

On the other hand, the Sigma DP0 Quattro has been touted online as being able to rival even medium-format cameras in terms of image quality. But is that really the case? Let’s take a closer look.

Why Compare These Two?

You might wonder, why not compare the Canon 11-24mm with a similar focal length, like the Canon 14mm? Well, the Sigma’s APS-C sensor is slightly larger than Canon’s, which changes the game. In this test, I’m using the Canon 7D Mark II paired with the 11-24mm lens, as it provides a broader field of view and crisper details than the 14mm.

The Shootout Canon vs Sigma

For this comparison, I shot the same scene using both the Sigma DP0 Quattro and the Canon 7D Mark II with the 11-24mm lens. We’ll evaluate them in two key areas: sharpness and sensor quality (including color, shadow noise, and dynamic range).

Sharpness

To really push the limits of these cameras, I scaled the images to 400% for a side-by-side analysis. The conditions were controlled—both shots were taken with the same aperture, shutter speed, and mounted on the same tripod with a 2-second timer.

At first glance, the Sigma DP0 Quattro impresses with incredibly sharp images. Every minute detail is visible, and it’s honestly stunning. On the other hand, while the Canon 11-24mm delivers equally sharp images, you might find yourself questioning the value of such an expensive lens when compared to Sigma’s sharpness at a fraction of the price. Sigma really does a remarkable job here.

Sensor Quality: Color, Noise, and Dynamic Range

Next, we’ll assess the sensor quality, starting with color reproduction. The Sigma’s colors are richer, vibrant, and full of life, while Canon’s color science leans slightly toward a pinkish tone, which is typical of Canon’s aesthetic. Ultimately, color preference is subjective, so it’s up to the photographer to decide which is more appealing.

Moving on to dynamic range, Canon takes the lead. The Canon 7D Mark II can handle about one more stop of exposure in the highlights compared to the Sigma DP0 Quattro. In shadows, though, they perform similarly, and both retain decent detail in darker areas.

When it comes to noise in the shadows, the Sigma impresses again. Scaling the images up to 400%, the Sigma DP0 Quattro delivers clean results with only a slight grain in the shadows, while the Canon 7D Mark II exhibits more noise. I disabled noise reduction on both cameras for this test, and the Canon struggles in this area, losing significant detail compared to Sigma.

The Verdict: Which Camera Wins?

After thoroughly comparing both cameras, the question arises: Which one is better?

The answer is, it depends. Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses, and it boils down to your shooting needs:

  • Canon 11-24mm with 7D Mark II:

    • Perfect for action photography or fast-moving subjects with its 10 frames per second burst shooting.

    • Offers a reliable autofocus system and excels in scenarios where speed and accuracy are essential.

    • Best for photographers who need flexibility with interchangeable lenses.

    • Of course, you need a bigger budget to afford both the lens and camera setup.

  • Sigma DP0 Quattro:

    • Ideal for photographers who prioritize image quality, rich color reproduction, and are willing to compromise on speed.

    • Since the Sigma has a fixed lens, it’s great for those who don’t need the versatility of swapping lenses.

    • It’s also a more affordable option compared to the Canon 11-24mm setup, making it a fantastic choice for photographers with limited budgets.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, both the Canon 11-24mm Ultra-Wide Angle lens and the Sigma DP0 Quattro have earned their place in the photography world. Canon’s system provides speed, flexibility, and dynamic range, while Sigma offers remarkable sharpness and color reproduction, all at a much lower price point.

Which one is right for you? That’s for you to decide based on your photography style and budget. Either way, you can’t go wrong with these two incredible tools.
